We can all write: we spend hours a day doing it – emails, documents, tweets, posts, memos, papers, presentations. Practice is meant to make perfect, but somehow that doesn’t seem to work with the English language. Powerpoints seem to go on and on, each slide more cluttered than the last. That proposal you had such high hopes for – why does it feel so flat? And that task the recruitment consultancy gave you – ’write 200 words on what matters most to you’ – why was that so hard?

A misspelling: not a great start for a writing company. You’ll be glad to know it’s deliberate.

Forthrightness is at the heart of our brand. We have clocked up decades of work in ad agencies, newspaper offices, on magazines, writing books. Environments you don’t survive without tact, diplomacy and empathy. But we also value honesty, straightforwardness and cutting to the chase. 

There’s a school of thought that any form of expression is valuable, that sincerity is as valuable as execution. That’s not us. There are rules that have to be learned; there are objectively better and worse ways of shaping a sentence. The rest is style. That we can talk about.

Forthwrite was founded by three writers. Who (playing fast and loose with spelling again) is the fourth?

You are. You are the fourth writer. Our courses are intensely practical. We’ll do some talking, a little demonstrating: but you do the writing. You’ll be writing under pressure, to a deadline, collaboratively and alone. It’ll sometimes be intense. 

But at the end, we guarantee you’ll have discovered, or rediscovered, the thrill of capturing ideas in words. You’ll go back to your desk, home office, kitchen table and find the blank page isn’t so intimidating. We’ll give you back time, because you will no longer consider waffly, hard-to-understand documents and baggy Powerpoints.
